AETHERIUS OBSCURITAS - Fekete Orvossag - Black Medicine CD Review

ARTIST: Aetherius Obscuritas     TITLE: Fekete Orvossag - Black Medicine     YEAR: 2009     LABEL: Paragon Records     RATING: 7 / 10     REVIEWED BY: Caroline Restiaux    REVIEW: For those of you that unfamiliar with Hungarian Black Metal band Aestherius Obscuritas please familiarize yourselves with them (him). If you like bands like Ragnarok, Burzum or Taake then give this release a shot as I can guarantee you have nothing to lose. They started off as a one-man band in 2002 and have just released their 5th studio album "Fekete Orvossag" (Black Medicine) The mastermind behind these works is Arkhorrl who once again got a live drummer (Zson) to bring a true organic feel to his music. The cd is filled with insane battery and melodic riffs. There is varied sounds when it comes to the vocals, it sounds like they are literally being torn apart at times and then smooth over a bit on a guttural death metal sound. There are a couple of slower tunes on the cd such as "Circinus Nebulae" as well and one that has a feel for the presence of Vikings in "Passed Out Of Sight = Passed Out Of Mind"". At some points it also sounds like they used flutes (or at least synthed ones). The production is done well while keeping the raw sound used in typical Norwegian metal bands even though they are not from there. Arkhorrl once said "We exist to be a true homage to what black metal stands for, both musically and ideologically". No disputing that these are words that he truly lives by.The cd consists of 5 tracks sung in their native tongue which is a nice twist to most albums being release now days. There is also a Marduk cover of the song "The Black Tormentor of Satan" from their Heaven Shall Burn...When We Are Gathered cd. The Bonus track on the cd is a Running Wild Cover "Black Demon"My favorite tracks on the cd are "Legelso Lelegzet" and "Passed Out Of Sight = Passed Out Of Mind". This is one of those cds that you are either gonna like or hate but I can tell you that I found this to be a bit of a hidden gem.      TRACKLISTING:    01. Legelso Lelegzet (First Breath)02.
